JanJan / Japan Alternative News for Justices and New Cultures

JanJan

JanJan/the Japan Alternative News for Justices and New Cultures was founded as an “internet newspaper” in 2003. One of the main organizers was a former editor at the Asahi Shimbun, Ken Takeuchi.

The website presented a wide range of articles written by citizens dealing with various fields, such as sports, local news, business, lifestyles, international relations, and politics. For instance, here is an article published on JanJan in 2007 that critically discussed the LDP’s constitutional-revision proposal, focusing on the freedom of access to information.

In 2010, the organizers announced the  suspension of publication of this media because of the decline of its advertising revenue while individuals became able to declare their opinions much more easily via social media.
