Reiwa Shinsengumi

(2019-)

Reiwa Shinsengumi was founded in April 2019 by Tarō Yamamoto, a former well-known actor, former member of the Liberty Party, and then-member of the House of Councillors. This party's establishment followed the merger between the Liberty Party (自由党) and the Democratic Party for the People (国民民主党).

Their platform includes abolishing consumption tax, banning nuclear power, raising minimum wage and setting basic income, cancelling the 2015 security legislation, and instituting laws that protect disability rights, and animal rights.

In the 2019 general election, the party successfully sent two candidates with severe disabilities to the Diet - this required that parts of the Diet building be renovated to accommodate those candidates, according to universal design principles.

Aiming to improve society and reduce exclusion of marginalized people, the party is opposed to constitutional revision under the Abe administration; they criticize the Liberal Democratic Party's 2012 draft for giving too much power to the state. On their current website, Reiwa Shinsengumi shares information about the party and their policies, activities, and members.
